Unity Gospel Radio The Station That Brings Everyone Together
Legendary Jamaican musician and actor Jimmy Cliff has died at the age of 81. His wife, Latifa Chambers, announced in a statement that he passed away after suffering a seizure, which was followed by pneumonia.
Born James Chambers in St. James Parish, Jamaica, Cliff became a global icon whose voice and spirit helped propel reggae and ska to worldwide audiences. He is perhaps best known for hits like “Many Rivers to Cross,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and his rendition of “I Can See Clearly Now.”
Cliff also made a profound impact as an actor — especially in the 1972 film The Harder They Come, which played a pivotal role in bringing Jamaican culture to the big screen and exposing the world to reggae’s power.
Throughout his six-decade career, he released more than 30 albums, earned multiple awards, and was honoured with Jamaica’s Order of Merit. His music, rooted in social consciousness, resilience, and hope, earned him deep respect and admiration both at home and abroad.
In her message, Latifa thanked fans, friends, fellow artists, and the medical team, saying their support “was his strength throughout his whole career.” She added, “Jimmy, my darling, may you rest in peace … I hope you all can respect our privacy during these hard times.”
Jimmy Cliff’s legacy as a pioneer and cultural ambassador remains indelible. He will be remembered not just for his music, but for his enduring spirit and the bridges he built through art.
